Deliberate Practice
It's the Ultimate Conversation PowerTool
Why get better at Speaking & Listening?
Because it affects…
every conversation,
every relationship,
every result you get in life.
Every. Single. One.
How do you actually get better?
Not someday.
Not theoretically.
Not by understanding more or better.
But in real conversations...?
The answer is:
Deliberate Practice.
Deliberate Practice is simple. Not easy. Not at all.
But truly simple... and worth it. Big time.
Deliberate Practice means:
You choose one specific behavior—one that actually makes a fundamental difference, that has an impact on all the others—and you practice it. On purpose. By design. Rigorously. With focused awareness and consistent determination. Not in your head. In real conversations.
I’ll show you how this works with a real life example: The NFL SuperStar Jerry Rice, who many say is the greatest football player of all time.
Jerry Rice didn’t become the greatest wide receiver in the game because he was the fastest. He wasn’t.
He became the greatest because he deliberately practiced the specific skills that mattered most... That scored points and won games.
Over and over. On purpose.
As said: Simple skills. Not easy.
• Jumping higher than defenders.
• Running precise patterns perfectly.
• Explosive cuts—stop on a dime, give you nine cents change.
• Endurance that outlasted everyone else. (He was still playing in his 40’s!)
And more... Over and over. On purpose.
He didn’t just play football.
He practiced the skills that win football games.
Same here. You don’t practice “communication.” You practice:
Ask Don’t Tell.
Asking the Right Questions.
Open Listening— By Design, not Default.
Listening for Values.
Inspired Interruption.
Validate Don’t Violate.
Yes, there are more...
You Deliberately Practice one at a time. In real conversations—even in conversations with your self.
That’s where the shift happens. Not in understanding. Not in reading. Not in talking about it. In doing it. Taking action.
You can study every distinction.
You can understand all of it.
You can even explain it perfectly.
And nothing will change.
Until you do it.
You can have all the right answers. Know exactly what to do. But until you do it... no results.
That’s why Deliberate Practice matters.
It is where the rubber meets the road.
It is where everything you learn produces real results and you get better, better, better.
Here’s how it works.
You become aware of something.
You try it.
You get some coaching—
you adjust.
Then you deliberately practice what works.
Again. And again.
Not all day.
Not every time.
Just one thing.
And then… you rest. Let it be.
So today, in one conversation, it might be: Ask one more question before you respond. Or: Listen for their values. Or: Let go of Agree / Disagree and Listen wide open. No opinion. No mental-judging. Or: Hearing both the words and the music.
That’s it. That’s all.
Focused. On purpose.
Do that consistently—every day—and something interesting happens. You improve. You get better. Just a little. Like 1/3 of one percent each day. But over a year? That becomes more than 100% improvement.
What would happen if you improved your Speaking & Listening more than 100%.
That’s the awesome power of Deliberate Practice.
You become someone
who listens differently
who speaks differently
who connects differently.
And that changes everything... Every Thing.
Because…
Life is Conversation.
Conversation creates Connection.
And when your conversations change—your relationships, your leadership, your results—all of it changes with them.
This isn’t a quick fix.
This is lifelong self-improvement.
And the best news?
You don’t need more time.
You don’t need more talent.
You don’t need to be gifted.
You just need to practice what matters most.
On purpose.
What’s one thing you could Practice, Deliberately, today, that would get you that 1/3 of one percent improvement?
Great. Do that.
And let’s have a conversation about how it goes.
Thanks for Listening.
I appreciate you
